Curriculum Development

September 01, 2009

Parent/Community Application

The Instructional Advisory Network (IAN), under the leadership of Anne Silavs, Director - Instruction, is the vehicle for the development of a structured program for curriculum review, improvement, and implementation in the Ocean View School District. The organization and structure of the IAN makes maximum utilization of available resources, capitalizes on what has been learned from District experience and curriculum improvement efforts, and makes curriculum reform manageable over time.

The IAN provides a forum for curriculum and instruction, student support services, community members, and selected school site representatives to review, refine, and evaluate a wide variety of instructional programs and activities. By synchronizing curriculum improvement activities with the State frameworks, State Content Standards, and eight year textbook adoption cycle, specific technical assistance and other resources are focused on the curricular areas under review and used in a more organized and predictive manner.

Committee membership provides a wide range of experiences for administrators, future administrators, classroom teachers, support personnel, and community members. Schools are part of the networking to the IAN which promotes articulation across the District for curriculum review, implementation, and improvement.

The Instructional Advisory Network provides the leadership and support needed to help the District plan and implement improvement strategies. District-wide curriculum review activities have five main goals:

1. A clearly-defined core curriculum in each subject area.
2. Recognition of the specific needs of special groups of students and instructional strategies to accommodate those needs so that all students can succeed in the core curriculum.
3. The identification or design of successful cross-curricular instructional practices, as appropriate.
4. An articulated curriculum among and between grade levels (scope and sequence).
5. Resources and policies supportive of the necessary ongoing staff development of teachers and administrators at the school site.

The following Curriculum Committees are part of the Instructional Advisory Council for 2009-2010:

Each Curriculum Committee is comprised of:
